I have heard the story so many times that if you go for the pink money you will earn so much. In the last few years I have seen my practice grow among gay and lesbian couples and I am sure that the average gay and lesbian couple are struggling just as much as the rest; even more. In fact, my gay male couples are struggling the most.
I guess you can say that gay couples do not have children and therefore they should be able to save more. On the other hand it is also true that many gay couples have children from a previous straight relationship or through adoption so the argument does not really work.
I also get the impression that gay males tend to overspend on clothes, food and furniture. The average straight single man just does not have the expensive taste that the average queer guy tends to have.
Another aspect is discrimination against top jobs. I think we can assume that wide open discrimination against us is far less than in the past, but who will know if you discriminate against someone by not giving them a promotion? That kind of discrimination will never seize to be.
An interesting aspect that someone once mentioned is that many gay males tend to work in jobs that pay less like nursing, social work, teaching and beauty. These jobs need people who can give more emotional support to customers, but they normally pay less than the macho jobs in law, medicine, engineering etc.
I made only a rough estimate (I am not an accountant), but on average my gay patients are poorer than my straight patients. My professor in stats would get a heart attack if he had a look at my research methodology, but I think I can say this with a clear conscience.
Are we overspending? Is it discrimination? Do we pick the less paying jobs? I have no idea, but the popular belief that queer men have big bucks is not true where I work, where I live or where I came from. I think it is a myth. Pink money is a nice dream to have, but it just isn’t true. Don’t get me wrong; I have enough, but I do not know a lot of gay guys I can say that about.
